Close To Home: The locally grown movement has given Ohio's apple industry a boost, and the future looks promising

YOU'RE not likely to find a grocery store more dedicated to supplying fresh, high-quality fruit than Heinen's, a family-owned chain of 17 supermarkets based in Northeast Ohio. It's not just the displays of colorful, well-lit fruits and vegetables, easily identifiable by price and variety. It's the fact that at the end of each day, all of the displays are taken down, refrigerated for the night, and repositioned for the new customers who come in the following morning. This past February, a group of Ohio apple growers had the chance to tour one Heinen's location just south of Cleveland. However, the tour was about more than just walking through a produce department. It was a reminder that the locally grown food movement is more important than ever before, and can serve as a launching pad for growers and retailers to work together to improve each of their bottom lines.
