Smartphones, twitter and new learning opportunities at anaesthetic conferences

Smartphones and their apps are extremely popular with anaesthetists [1]. Smartphones were originally developed for communication; we now have the potential to use this technology for real-time, online discussion via social networking sites such as Twitter. Although most consider Twitter as a method of personal communication, it is now used widely in business and academia. Twitter has been used extensively at non-medical conferences for some time, and is now becoming more commonplace at medical meetings [2, 3]. Table 1 describes commonly used Twitter terminology.
