Information and communication Systems of automobiles in the future will have broadband wireless access systems to the Internet with reasonable cost such as DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communications), wireless LAN and so on. Since coverage area of these systems will be limited, communication system using both road-to-vehicle communication and multihop inter-vehicle communication will be effective to extend availability of the systems. For this purpose, multihop inter-vehicle communication network is required to have scalability of performance in the case a large number of terminals are to be supported by the network. However, conventional routing methods of multihop mobile communication network using only peer-to-peer communication have difficulty to realize scalability of performance. This paper presents a new routing method of multihop mobile communication network using wireless LAN and cellular system. In the proposed method, wireless LAN is used for multihop mobile communication network to send data packets, and cellular system is used for sending routing control packets for wireless LAN. Each terminal broadcasts its link state packet of wireless LAN to other terminals using cellular systems, and the routing table is constructed on the principle of link state routing protocol. The proposed system can reduce number of control packets transmitted by each terminal than conventional methods, which leads to reduction of control overhead of a terminal.
