Annual fodder crops in Southern Urals.

Cultivation of Sudan grass in pure and mixed stands was studied in the Orenburg region of Russia in 2000-02. Plots were set up on common heavy loam chernozem. The treatments studied were pure stand of Sudan grass [Sorghum sudanense] and its mixed crops with peas, soyabean, vetch [Vicia sp.?], melilot [Melilotus], rape, sorghum and maize. Data on leaf area, photosynthetic potential, photosynthetic productivity, biomass, crude protein yield and economic data are tabulated. The highest productivity was observed in mixed crops of Sudan grass + melilot (23.7 t/ha dry weight) and Sudan grass + vetch (23.4 t/ha dry weight). In order to obtain nutritionally balanced fodder the authors recommend cultivation of Sudan grass (1.5 mln seeds/ha) in two component mixed crops with peas (0.6 mln seeds/ha), melilot or sorghum (0.08 mln seeds/ha).
