Status of Semiconductor and FPD Industries in Korea

The semiconductor industries in Korea have been developed with main industry since 1982, mostly driven by large corporations and rapidly grown. In the aspects of technology, memory devices from 64 MDRAM to 4 GDRAM even higher memory lead to the other competitive companies and countries, and the mass production Fab for 300mm is constructing now. In economically, the semiconductor products are the first undoubted exporting goods and the ratio is occupied 4.6 percent and 7.7 percent in total domestic industry and the world market of semiconductor industry, respectively. Since 1995 the FPD industry has been also started by large corporations, it is developing with another main industry of Korea on the behalf of post semiconductor industry. The occupation ratio of FPD industry is 1 percent in total domestic industry, especially the production of TFT-LCD is occupied 42 percent in world market of this industry. In this paper, the technical trends, sales and investment plan of large corporations in Korea and the government policy for the future, etc were described.
