Primary Generation and Secondary Formation of the Atmospheric Fine Particles

Increased interest in the health effects of suspended particulate matter has focused attention on the definition, constitution, and behaviors of fine particles in ambient air. The new standard for fine particles (PM2. 5 and smaller) promulgated in U.S. EPA in July 1997 is stimulated the study relating to PM2 .5 in Japan. In this article, behaviors of fine particles that consist of primary generated and secondary formed particles are reviewed briefly in related to measurement methods, gas/particle distribution, constitution, source apportionments, acidity and strategy for emission control of them in Japan.
