Hypoxia development under partial flooding of etiolated wheat seedlings

Development of hypoxia and its influence on growth characteristics of etiolated winter wheat seedlings (cv. Mironovskaya 808 and Odesskaya 51) in the model conditions were studied. An analysis of kinetics of oxygen consumption by seedlings in different conditions revealed that its internal movement from shoots to roots was greater for Mironovskaya 808 than Odesskaya 51 cv. It was found that 48 h flooding of whole plants inhibited both the stem and root growth of less tolerant cv. Odesskaya 51. Significant delay of the root system dvelopment and elongation were observed even in the case when ill hypoxic state was partially compensated by oxygen transport from the aerated shoots. More tolerant Mironovskaya 808 seedlings continue to grow in the whole range (4-18.5 cm)of submergence depth that is in coincidence with the higher porosity of ill organs as compared with sensitive cv. Odesskaya 51.
