Ten maternal lines and their counterparts with CMS of the ES and C types were used, together with fertile pollen parents (one of them a natural restorer for C-type CMS). The lines and testcross hybrids were studied during 1993-95. In most cases thehybrids showed a similar response to ES and C cytoplasms, indicating that ES sources of group C could be used for hybrid seed production, especially in cases where C cytoplasm has an adverse effect reflected in late anther exsertion and partial pollen formation, leading to poor hybrid seed quality.
