One of the great advantages of age-and there aren't very many-is that wisdom and a sense of history are imputed to you. I don't claim the wisdom, but in looking at the history of the world steel business I can identify several game-changing developments that weren't necessarily obvious at the time. Who are the individuals who have had the greatest impact on the steel business in the past 50 years? We all instinctively turn to technological developments, but it is almost impossible to attribute the basic oxygen furnace (BOF) process and thin slab casting to any one individual. Similarly, the consolidation that has occurred in the industry has had a significant positive impact.
