Wild mammals of Izmailovo forest park.

Mammals inhabiting one of Moscow's old, large forest parks, Izmailovo, were recorded. Monitoring of small mammals was carried out using traplines (1966-95), that of larger animals by tracking (winter, 1994). Excessive recreation loads and other anthropogenic factors (forest logging, waste water release to the river, etc.) had a negative influence on the mammal fauna of the forest park. Nevertheless in the park there are representatives of several mammalian orders: Chiroptera, Insectivora, Lagomorpha, Rodentia, Carnivora. The populations of the small mammals, Clethrionomys glareolus and Apodemus agrarius, were rather large. Sciurus vulgaris survives due to additional food provided by visitors. Lepus europaeus and L. timidus are well adapted to lifein the park; their population densities were reasonably high. The following predatory mammals were recorded: Mustela erminea, M. nivalis, M. vison, M. putorius and Vulpes vulpes.
