A new genus of the family Pyrgulidae (Gastropoda, Pectinibranchia) from the fresh water of Azov-Black Sea basin (related to the problem of Ponto-Caspian species)

A new genus, Euxinipyrgula, from the subfamily Turricaspiinae (Pyrgulidae family) is described. Its type species is Pyrgula milachevitchi Golikov et Starobogatov, 1966. The species of this genus differ from those of Turricaspia in the sharp lowering of the last whorl by the aperture and in the presence on a large inflation of the renal oviduct supplied with 4-6 pockets. The authors point out that representatives of this genus never lived in the Caspian Sea, though they belong to the Ponto-Caspia complex. They are known from deposits of the Black Sea basin dated not less than one million years before formation of the recent Caspian fauna.
