The intraspecific structure of Mellicta ambigua (Menetries 1859) is revised and ranges of its subspecies are specified. M. ambigua kurmaevi ssp. n. from northern Yakutia is described and the lectotype of M. ambigua ambigua is designated. Contentious issues related to the identification of typical localities and authorship of the taxon kenteana (Staudinger 1897) are resolved.
