At first blush, there doesn't seem to be very much of a connection between gambling and libraries, but casinos are quickly becoming a bigger and bigger source of the local, county, and state revenues that fund school and public libraries. Theproliferation of gaming in this country is truly amazing. Sixty years ago if you wanted to gamble legally you were pretty much limited to a small cluster of casinos in the sleepy desert towns of Nevada. After World War II one of those dusty towns, Las Vegas, began to grow and prosper. It has now become a destination spot for families on vacation. It wasn't too long ago that Las Vegas was the last place in the world where you would think of taking your kids, but today there are almost as many strollers on the Vegas strip as there are on Main Street in Disneyland. I'm not sure, however, if ALA has warmed up to the charms of Las Vegas.
