Heretic. Infidel. Heterodox. Such terms may spring to mind after reading this piece, but I hope further reflection will yield more measured responses -- "original" or "Maverick" would do just fine. Surely after the initial shock is past, readers will rush to the defense of my proposal, which is that most libraries cannot maintain a rare-book collection, however small, on the side; and that they should be more inclined not to try.
