I knew it was time to write about libraries and community networks when, sitting in a meeting tor Huron Valley Community Network, an information system just coming online in Ann Arbor. Michigan. I realized that half the lolks in the room were librarians. This is definitely a trend. Increasingly, librarians have been using new technologies to develop or collaborate on communitv networks--free or low-cost electronic community information systems, usually Internet-based, that can provide a variety of services, typically data (such as communitv information) and communication (such as e-mail). Even more exciting, these community networks are often created in collaboration with other local agencies and advocacy groups, weaving libraries more tioht.lv into the community organism.
