The demand for electric power by far greater in summer than in other seasons. Electric power companies want to reduce the peak load in summer and even out power consumption. To comply with this need, MHI developed a new ice storage packaged air conditioner. Features are the cutting and shifting the peak power consumption. The unit can achieve a daytime cut in the peak power consumption and a shift from day to night. For the peak cut system, refrigerant in the system is condensed by ice which is stored during the night. and then the refrigerant is circulated by a liquid pump using a compressor newly developed by MHI. For the peak shift system, the refrigerant is subcooled by the ice with higher efficiency using a heat exchanger. The electric peak load is reduced by 90 percent utilizing the ice and the power consumption is reduced by 25 percent using the compact subcool heat exchanger.
