Isaac Williams Brewer (1867-1928): an unsung hero.

ISAAC W. BREWER WAS BORN in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, in 1867. He received his MD degree from Columbia University in 1897 and worked briefly as an assistant demonstrator of anat omy for the public schools of Washington, DC. He spent most of his medical career fighting in fectious disease epidemics in American towns and rural areas. He served as health officer of Watertown, New York, superin tendent of the Steuben County Tuberculosis Sanitarium, New York, superintendent of the Tompkins County Tuberculosis Sanitarium, New York, and finally, Sanitary Supervisor of New York State Department of Health. Brewer was acutely aware of the limits of curative medicine in sav ing lives and an ardent advocate of preventive medicine.
