Results on Extension Activities for Newly Introducing of Upland Rice in Non-Rice Cultivated Areas of the Tropical Forest Zone of Cameroon

Traditional staple foods in Southern Cameroon are plantain banana, cassava and yams. The consumption of rice has been growing especially in the urban areas. Its consumption per capita increased from 26 kg in 2001 to 31kg in 2010. However, production of rice was still 153000 tons and more than 360000 tons of rice was imported. Under this situation, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MINADER) implemented "The Upland Rice Development Projectof the Tropical Forest Zone in Cameroon" from 2011to 2016 to introduce upland rice cultivation in the area where almost of all target farmers had no experience of rice cultivation. The objectives of this study were to survey the rate of continuous and abandoned farmers of upland rice cultivation, to understand and analyze their motivations to continue and the reasons of abandoned, and to consider measures against constrains for upland rice development in Cameroon.
