摘要

January is an ideal month to plan the purchase of bee colonies. For the new beekeeper, it provides adequate time to research various options for colony purchase, assemble beekeeping equipment, and secure a safe location for the colonies where they will be able to gather a nectar crop and produce honey and/or pollinated crops. For the second and third year beekeeper it allows you time to consider options for colony replacement and apiary growth. There is growing statistical evidence1 that there are heavy losses when beekeepers keep only one hive of bees. As a group, single colony beekeepers lose over 50 percent of their colonies every year. This reflects a lack of experience by the beekeeper, poor varroa mite control, and old fashioned bad luck.
