摘要

Ever try underwater beekeeping? Thanks to Hurricane Irene and her sidekick Lee. some beekeepers had this unfortunate experience. Becyards (and honey houses) that had been in use for years, decades even, with never a hint of a water problem, suddenly were beset with serious problems when small streams were hit with 10 inches of rain or more in a short period oftime, becoming raging torrents or huge ponds with startling rapidity. Vermont, with 2,000 registered beekeepers, the majority of them hobbyists and side-liners, appears to have been hardest hit, both along the coast as well as farther inland. The heaviest damage occurred in the southeastern and southwestern parts of the state, according to Steven Parise, Vermont StateApiarist. Sideliner Jennings Berger, from Townsend, Vermont (which is 3+ hours from the coast), found himself threatened by a 12-foot wall of water welling up from what is normally a small brook.
