Margy Terpstra got hooked on gardening for birds and wildlife in 1979, when she designed a garden for hummingbirds. House hunting in early May 1996, during the peak of spring migration, she and her husband, Dan, stopped at a home in Kirkwood, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis, with a 0.6-acre lot. "We stepped out onto the deck, and the birdsong was overwhelming," she says.
