What makes a birding hotspot truly great.You may be thinking that the answer to that question is self-evident: "Lots of birds, right."Yes and no. Recently, I toughened my standard for greatness.The problem with many celebrated birding spots is that they are great only under certain conditions or at certain times of year.Visit High Island, on the Gulf coast of Texas, in July, and your chances of catching one of the location's famous spring songbird fallouts are slim bordering upon nonexistent. Go to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, along the Appalachian flyway in Pennsylvania, in October, migratory prime time, but catch a day when the winds are notcoming from the southeast, and you'll have ample opportunity to appreciate the colorful fall foliage and commanding view.
