The displacement of intact and degraded nature forests and agricultural surfaces by forestry plantation constantly increased in southern central Chile in the process of the past 30 years. In the VIII region was the change rate of the land use on agricultural surfaces in favor of plantations for the period 1994-1998 about 50000 hectars. This corresponds to 2.4% of the surface of the region. The results of the Chilean forest mapping of 1994-1997 in the regional level and their actualization of 1998 permitted for the first time the collection and analysis of the changes in the land use (CONAF, 1999). An exhaustive evaluation of the data from the Chilean forest mapping was not however so far possible, since a theoretical framework as well as methodical beginnings are missing for the interpretation and analysis of the processes run off in this region.
