AFM and STM investigations of textured monolayer graphite films on (111) Ir and (1010) Re surfaces

摘要

Two-dimensional graphite films(DGF) on surfacesof iridium and rhenium were grown in ultra high vacuum bybenzene vapor adsorption at 1500-1800K temperature.Thermoelectron methods and Auger electron spectroscopy wereapplied for their characteri-zation The films were found to havethe graphite nature and the monolayer thickness. Surfacetopography was made in air at room temperature by STM andAFM; the monolayer thickness of the films was confirmed and itwas shown that 2DGF had a complex topography either in aform of numerous hills with linear sizes ~3000μm and heights~300μm(on Re) or in a form of a system of long gofers withnearly constant linear sizes(on Ir). On atomic scale the filmspreserved their graphite structure. We believe that the complextopography of the films is the result of their deformation undercooling from the growth temperature to room temperature due todifferences in thermal coefficients of expansion of the graphitelayer and metal substrates.
