Filament winding technology is now extensively used in commercial manufacture of FRP pressure vessels such as air cylinders for fireman's breathing apparatus, oxygen containers for medical uses, and fuel gas containers for natural gas vehicles, developed since several years.This paper describes basic concept of filament winding technology, procedure to determine the winding paths based on the geodesic curves, elements of winding machine, design concepts based on the properties of unidirectional reinforced composites. The advantages and disadvantages of filament winding were discussed together with the items of research for further progress of the technology.
