This paper provides an overview of RAID BOOSTERTM, a new architecture to accelerate write access in PC-based database systems using a RAID (redundant array of inexpensive (independent) disks). A write-mode conversion technique from random accesses into a set of sequential accesses has been realized in a special hardware module, which can achieve a several-fold improvement in the write performance of RAID5. Experimental results have proved that our system is efficient enough to perform database functions in on-line transaction processing (OLTP) and data ware housing (DWH) applications.
