Experiments on narrow groove welding with a single string bead deposition per layer wereperformed using automatic orbital TIG welding equipment, and the narrow groove shape and weldingconditions were optimized for stainless steel and carbon steel pipes. The characteristics of narrowgroove weld joints of these materials were investigated in the areas of metallurgical structure andmechanical properties. The process of one bead per layer was found to produce a good homogeneousweld and the total weld has the same micro structure between two regular fusion lines and, therefore,uniform mechanical properties. Based on these test results, the narrow groove welding process wasapplied to butt weld joints for austenitic stainless steel pipe with a large diameter.
