Patent Pools as Public Health Meta-CoUaborations: The Experience of NIH and the Medicines Patent Pool

I wanted to talk alittle bit about, in terms of some aspects of public health implications, of some metacollaborations. That was the topic I was asked to talk about. So I want to give you a little of a taste of some interesting things we are working on back at the NIH. You've seen this sort of slide (Fig.1)in several forms already in the symposium today. And it's basically the idea that we're trying to sort of stimulate this process. You can see this cycle, this innovation cycle. We'd like to get it going quicker, better and faster because there's always quite a bit of unmet medical health needs. We've heard alittle bit about some of the ones in nephrology and other clinical areas mentioned already today. I'm going to talk alittle bit about some aspects of that related to HIV.
