Anti-phospholipase A2 receptor antibodies and malignancy in membranous nephropathy

In developed countries, the vast majority (70%-80%) of membranous nephropathy cases are idiopathic (iMN), whereas the remainder are due to various secondary causes, such as autoimmune or infectious diseases, drugs, or malignancies. An association between MN and malignancy has been described for decades and accounts for ~ 1.0% of patients with MN. " Previous studies reported that MN could appear as a paraneoplastic syndrome months and sometimes years before a (most often solid) tumor can be detected.
