The role of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators in long-term dialysis patients.

Despite the number of prospective randomized studies demonstrating the efficacy of implant-able cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy in reducing sudden cardiac death (SCD), long-term dialysis patients have largely been unrepresented. In this issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Char-ytan and colleagues report on trends in the use and outcomes of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators in patients undergoing dialysis in the United States. We commend Charytan and colleagues on their efforts to add data on this understudied segment of the population.
