Traditionally, the pharmaceutical industry has utilized downstream analysis for product quality. This can occur up to two weeks after manufacturing completion. The Food and Drugs Agency (FDA) have realised this as a key constraint to the modern industry. Online measurement for pharmaceutical manufacturing is clearly the direction in which the industry is steering. One emerging method of granulator homogeneity analysis is Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy probes the vibrational transitions of molecules in the system, yielding graphical representation of the formulation constituents. Although it has not yet been fully validated in such a role for granulation processes, it is of particular interest to the industry, and academic research.
