In field trials in 1997-98 with D. opposita cv. Shintanmaru, yield increased with increasing seed tuber weight, but the increase in yield was offset by the increase in cost of heavier seed tubers. Seed tuber weight could be reduced to half that of the heaviest seed tubers without a significant loss in yield. Tuber weight decreased with increasing plant density, but yield increased due to the increase in the number of harvested tubers. However, the number of marketable tubers/plant of >250 g decreased with increasing plant density.
