p-Coumaric acid and ferulic acid inhibited the mycelial growth of R. solani at 1000 mg/litre. p-Hydroxybenzoic acid and vanillic acid did not inhibit the fungus at 1000 mg/litre. p-Coumaric acid exhibited lysis of the fungi and ferulic acid inhibited mycelial growth of F. oxysporum at 1000 mg/litre. p-Hydroxybenzoic acid and vanillic acid did not inhibit mycelial growth at 1000 mg/litre. Benzoic acid was more effective against R. solani than p-coumaric and ferulic acids, and equally effective as the two against F. oxysporum. Re-seeding 26 days after application of p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid or p-hydroxybenzoic acid at 500-1000 mg/litre, was effective in decreasing damping-off. However, these phenolic acids did not decrease wilting disease.
