Sustainable recreational fisheries can be a means of conserving fish populations, even for endangered species. Miyabe charr Salvelinus malma miyabei is a popular target for recreational anglers, which inhabits only Lake Shikaribetsu, Japan. In this study, the sustainability of recreational fishery for endemic Miyabe charr was assessed in terms of satisfaction of anglers and stock sustainability, by conducting a questionnaire survey of anglers. The results suggested that anglers can be sufficiently satisfied and motivated to visit again by catching approximately 15 Miyabe charr per day. The present population level can be sustained at this catch rate. In addition, mortality caused by angling is controlled by fishing regulations, and was kept to a reasonable level to sustain the Miyabe charr population. Moreover, anglers travel from all over Japan to Lake Shikaribetsu for Miyabe charr angling, boosting the regional economy through their fishing trips, which enhance the social and economic value of Miyabe charr. Based on these results, recreational fishing for Miyabe charr is sustainable and contributes to its conservation.
