Stripes are a good fit in many desing schemes;historically their popularity is evident from images of interiors in canvas paintings that have survived. The earliest known wallpaper manufactured includes stripe patterns. The Regency period in England decorated with soft tone-ontone wide stripes. Empire style in Napoleon's France employed narrower high contrast striping with striking effect. Victorians went forward embellishing stripe grounds with all sorts of elaborate patterning.
