Steel plants are concentrating on low energy consumption and low emissions in industrially advanced as well as developing nations for better competitiveness and also to prevent global warming . Steel industry has one of the largest shares in energy consumption as well as pollution. Electric arc furnace (EAF) consumes more energy than any other equipment except blast furnace in the steel industry . EAF consumes electric energy along with a moderate amount of chemical energy for generating the required heat for the melting of recyclable scrap. The heat energy is primarily generated by the burning arc between the electrodes and the scrap, or its melt.
