Systematics of moths in the genus Catocala (noctuidae). III. the types of William H. Edwards, Augustus R. grote, and achille guenee

Nomenclatural status is assessed for the 75 Calocala names authored by William Henry Edwards. Angustus Radeliffe Grote (including Coleman T. Robinson), and Achille Guenee. Three neotypes and 46 leetotypes are designated, and six new or revised synonymies are presented. Historical and biographical notes on these authors and the collections on which they based their descriptions are provided. Additionally, the unpublished Calocala paintings by the early North American naturalist John Abbot are analyzed in detail for the first time.
