Challenges of Managing Sandy Soils under Canal Irrigation in the Thar Desert

Late Dr B.V. Mehta (1913-1979) was a stalwart amongst the soil scientists of his times in the country. His major research contributions lay in the field of fertility assessment, including micronutrient status in the soils of Gujarat. The information generated by him and his team with the then existing tedious procedures and poor instrumentation was lasting and paved a durable foundation for soil management approaches for the State. A humble and soft-spoken person, his zeal, sense of duty and involvement in research were exemplary.
