Comparative assessment of RC wall-frame buildings designed with DDBD and FBD method

摘要

The seismic standards of the major countries today include the force-based design approach for buildings/structures. The alternative displacement based design approaches are becoming popular in recent times. In this study the direct Displacement Based Design (DDBD) approach is implemented for the RC wall-frame structural system in context of the IS codes. This paper presents the results of the comparative evaluation of the 4, 8 and 12 storey RC wall-frame buildings designed using DDBD and convectional Force-Based Design (FBD) approach as per Indian standards. The designed RC wall-frame systems are analyzed using nonlinear time-history analysis with six earthquake accelerograms and the damage index is investigated through lateral drift profile of the models. Then all the considered buildings are analyzed using nonlinear static pushover analysis to obtain the capacity curve. The response reduction factors of the designed RC wall-frame system are also evaluated. Comparison of the nonlinear time-history analysis results in terms of inter-storey drift and nonlinear static analysis results in terms of performance point and response reduction factor for RC wall-frame buildings indicate the efficiency of the DDBD approach.
