Tripospermum buteae sp. nov. - A New Ectoparasitic Hyphomycete from India

A novel species of dematiacious hyphomycetes Tripospermum was encountered during survey for microfungi from diversified habitats of Jabalpur. Based on a detailed study the present isolate is described as a new species namely T. buteae sp. nov. Duringa survey, the authors observed a sooty mold disease on Butea monosperma (Lam.) Taub. belonging to Family Leguminaceae. The causal organism was identified as a species of Tripospermum Speg. The genus was first described by Spegazzini (1918) with T. acerinum (Syd.) Speg. as a type species for a segregate of Triposporium Corda. Since then many species are transferred from Triposporium Corda and Ceratosporella Hohnel to newly erected genus. Hughes (1951) proposed four new combinations raising the number toseven, in the known species of Tripospermum. Agnihothrudu (1962) for the first time reported it from India. A number of species of the genus (Sharma 1971; Sharma et al 1995; Sharma and Singh 1996; Singh 1971; Subramanian and Bhat 1981; Agnihotrudu 1962;Das and Mohanty 1972; Gupta and Gupta 1985) have been reported from India. It is characterized by effuse, brown, blackish brown or black, often crust like colonies; much branched and anastomosing hyphae; unbranched or occasionally loosely branched, paleto midbrown conidiophores; Conidia terminal or solitary, dry, acrogenous or pleurogenous, branched, usually made up of pyriform or ellipsoidal stalk cell and two pairs of divergent, subulate, pale to mid brown or olivaceous brown, smooth, multiseptate amis (Ellis 1971). The microscopic characters of the present isolate do not match with any of the species. Hence, it is described as a new species namely Tripospermum buetae sp. nov.
