Corrosion Assessment of an Implantable Dental Co-Cr Alloy in Artificial Saliva and Biocompatibility Behavior

The corrosion behavior of a binary Co-20 Cr alloy was investigated to determine the biocompatibility and corrosion rate associated with the release of metal ions that can produce adverse effects inside the human body. Co-Cr and 316L SS alloys were corrosion tested in artificial saliva by electrochemical techniques. For biocompatibility assay, human osteoblast cells were cultured in a Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium, and for understanding the osteoblast function over the surface materials, the cells were cultured in "mineralizing media." Polarization curves indicated that the corrosion rate of 316L SS was reduced when compared with the one exhibited by the Co-Cr alloy. According to linear polarization resistance curves, the R-p values for the Co-20 Cr (M1) alloy were higher than those of the 316L SS after 9 days of immersion. This indicates that the Co-20 Cr (M1) alloy developed a more stable protective film on its surface, after the 9th day of immersion. The incubation of human osteoblasts revealed that the osteoblasts covered the entire surface of the Co-20 Cr alloy. It resulted in an outstanding cell-surface contact with a polygonal and extended morphology with filopodia and lamellipodia without any cytotoxic response.
