Student Motherhood and Female Leaders in Entomology: Lessons Learned in Graduate School Survival

There is a low percentage of female faculty members in the sciences with children, but about half the graduate students studying entomology in the United States are female (Maxwell 2011], Projections indicate that female enrollment in postbaccalau-reate programs will continue at a higher rate than male enrollment (U.S. Department of Education 2011). The representation of women in the sciences, and particularly in entomology, has been increasing for the past three decades, but mom-scientists are a new wave of change that we can welcome, embrace, and understand through awareness and steadfast leadership.
