Bioterrorism and the vital role of family physicians.

It has been almost a decade since the anthrax attacks of 2001. In response to that crisis, which began only one week after the 9/11 attacks, America has made major strides in protecting itself from a similar calamity in the future. The Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness arid Response Act of 2002 and the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act of 2006 created new capabilities for emergency preparedness and response. This resulted in a staff division within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, which coordinates the medical aspects of disasters and emergencies, such as bioterrorism.
