Portals to the World (www.loc.gov/iT/inlernational/portals. html) is a Library of Congress guide to Web resources. A product of the unit Area Studies Collections, it provides one-stop shopping and self-service access to information about every nation of the world, organized by broad topical areas, selected and annotated by the reference librarians and area specialists, and provided without charge over the Internet. The chapter outlines the organizational and management factors that moved the project from vision to implementation and describes the content, structure, anil technical background of the Portals themselves. Staff and users have benel'itted from the projeel even while quality control and promotion remain ongoing challenges.
