摘要

Thin Layer Activation (TLA) is one of the most important nondestructive techniques used for studying the wear and tear of machine parts. The principle of the TLA technique involves incorporation of a suitable radio-nuclide over a certain thickness of the machine part followed by continuous measurement of the radioactivity of the radio-nuclide during the operation of the equipment / machine. As the top layer of the machine part is removed due to wear, the incorporated radioactivity is decreased. The loss in radioactivity is proportional to the extent of the layer removed. A calibration curve between the thickness of the layer removed and the residual activity is generated before the investigation. The present paper describes preliminary feasibility studies and standardization of the TLA technique for wear, corrosion, erosion studies of various machine parts containing iron as a major constituent.
