EXTRACTION OF THE MUMMIFIED FETUS IN INDIGENOUS CATTLE BY CAESAREAN SECTION : A CASE REPORT

Atypical case of fetal mummification was discussed here and was successfully manage through cesarean section.Mummification of the fetus is a gestational disorder, which is responsible for the economic loss of dairy farm by extending the intercal ving period as well as fetal loss. It is an uncommon condition in cattle in which the fetus dies inside the uterus while the pregnancy is maintained. Generally, the fetus is not expelled and preserved in the uterus beyond the normal gestation period because the pregnancy corpus luteum is maintained beyond the normal gestation period. The incidence of mummification hasbeen reported to be as high as 5% (Hornaday, 1947) but generally less than 2% (Barth, 1986). Breed, previous calving history and any gestational or systemic problem during gestation are few factors that predispose fetal mummification. Most mummified fetuses will remain in the uterus until treatment is given to expel them or until they removed by caesarean section (Wenkoff and Manns, 1977). Higher incidence of mummification has been noticed in Guernsey and Jersey cattle, however, reports on fetal mummification indigenous cattle are very limited and the present case details about management of mummified fetus through caesarean section after failed medicinal therapy.
