This project has taken the next step in repairing ironnotch refractories from outside the furnace, whereas the design ofthe shell plate prepares for the next repair. Future iron notchrefractory repairs may be performed more expeditiously thanbefore, since the removable plate will eliminate the need forcutting and welding shell plate.The analytical work illustrates the need for high thermalconductivity refractories to promote enhanced cooling and low-conductivity materials to promote a thermal reserve to cure thetap-hole clay. It is important that tap-hole clay suppliers test theirproducts more completely so that operators and designers have thedata required to make the appropriate material selections.
