The special immiscible elastomer blends with broad damping temperature range derived from ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer rubber (EPDM) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) (the extent of epoxidation is 50%, ENR-50) were prepared and characterized by different techniques. Dynamic mechanical analysis results showed two not only separate but expanded loss peaks of EPDM/ENR-50 blends compared with their pure component; transmission electron microscope analysis and scanning electron microscope analysis confirmed the immiscibility of this binary blends; energy dispersive spectrometer analysis revealed a distribution shift of sulfur (vulcanizer) in the two components before and after vulcanization, and atomic force microscopy analysis indicated a variation of two phases' modulus when compared with their pure component, which deeply proved the migration of vulcanizer in this immiscible blends. For further improvement of its damping properties, ENRs (extent of epoxidation, 40 and 25%) were added into the binary blend, resulting in a high damping (tan > 0.3) EPDM/ENRs elastomer with a broad damping temperature ranges from -80.2 degrees C to 40.3 degrees C.
