摘要

Mitochondria are vital units present in every cell. Mitochondria play central role in cell's life and death. The major function of mitochondria is production of ATP molecules which are necessary for cellular activity. During production of ATP, reducing equivalents and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced and neutralized by anti-oxidant enzymes. Higher level of ROS is observed in diabetic conditions and results in mitochondrial dysfunction. This review deals with impact of ROS produced in mitochondria on diabetes, different conditions of diabetes, available mitochondria targeting moieties and treatment approaches. Special attention is paid to different approaches used for diabetes treatment by targeting mitochondria.
