A brief description of the leading causes of damage to plain journal and tilting pad bearings was presented, with corrective actions recommended for each. Alternative solutions were introduced in order to mitigate the conditions that created the plain journal and tilting pad bearing damage. Plain bearings have been used for many years in all types of rotating machinery, and the vast majority give excellent service over long periods of time. However, when they suffer damage, the cause may be obscure. The bearings themselves are often blamed, and while faulty design or bearing manufacture may be responsible, the damage frequently comes from an extraneous source. This discussion instructs the operator, based on available facts, regarding the likely causes of bearing damage and assists in determining proper corrective action. This decision must be based on the nature and severity of the damage and on the significance of the damage type.
